You know what I hate? I hate "Best of..." compilations from artists who really don't deserve to have "Best of..." compilations.
The End.
But I mean, sometimes, the artist just plain sucks. Then it's easy to overlook them because you know somewhere, for some reason, a glitter covered 12 year old is creaming her jeans over them. Fine. Whatever floats your boat I say.
But other times we have both good and bad artists releasing overly hyped compilations when they don't have any valid reason.
Case in point: Robbie Williams released his best of after only releasing 2 albums. TWO ALBUMS! Hardly warrants sifting through the back catalogue to get to the reaaaaaaal golllllllllld.
The main reason I rant on this is former NZ uber-band, the 90'sly named "Supergroove" (ROCK! SUPERGROOVE ROLL! SUPERGROOVE ROCK AND YOU KNOW WE GOT SOUL!) have recently released POSTAGE, their best of.
How many albums did Supergroove release before they broke up in 96?
Two.
How many EPs?
One. (That I know of)
How many songs on the 6-song EP were also on the first album?
Two.
How many songs from the EP were good apart from those 2?
None.
How popular was the first album?
HUGELY successful. Everyone in NZ around my age in the mid90s owned this album. Everyone.
How popular was the second album?
Biggest. Flop. Ever. I got it for 3 bucks from the Warehouse and regret wasting so much money on it. The reason it stunk so bad? Stank? Stanky? Well, the band originally consisted of about 492 people. Heh. No but seriously, they had two singers, Karl Steven, the neurotical blonde, and Che Ness, the polynesian God. Che Ness, aka Che Fu, was the star. He left after the EP and before the 2nd album. Result: Second album Backspacer was overlooked for damn good reason. It's terrible.
So that's gotta leave maybe 1 or 2 songs (if they're lucky) off the 2nd album, and the entire first album to pick from? No doubt it's chokka with remixes and unreleased crap, but I looked at the tracklisting.
They should have just re-released the first album with a different name.
Gah!
